Chemistry Honors, and A/P Chemistry
Course Syllabus
Instructor : Mr. Soliman Room 725
office Hours: TWT 8:45-9:15 AM, M-F 3:45-4:00 and other times by appointment.
Course Content: The purpose of this course is to prepare students for upper science classes such as Physics, Physics Honors and Advance Placement Chemistry at the High School level. Also, beginning collage Chemistry. The chemistry text book and other supporting materials will be used regularly.
PHILOSOPHY: Have you ever been curious enough about something to ask yourself “ I wonder how this works?”. Then, did you follow through by making a few simple tests? If you have, you acted like a scientist. Scientists search for relationships that can be used to explain and predict the behavior of things. They often answer their questions from the results of their experiment.
Grade report: Grades are posted @ BTHS Web.
Homework: Home work will be collected daily, weekly or at end of unit. Late homework will be accepted at a sliding scale of (-20% of grade) for everyday late. Homework will not be accepted after five days.
Notebook: Will be kept in a three ring binder and will include class notes, book notes, assignments, quizzes, tests and course syllabus.
All class notes must be hand written.
Participation: involves being in class on time with materials, as well as being attentive and respectful.
Tests: 100 points each test
1- All tests must be done in black ink
2- Students must show completed work to earn points as needed.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURE:
1-Cooperation, organization, and mutual respect are the key words to success.
2-A positive attitude, strong work ethic and a good sense of humor really help.
GRADING POLICY:
The grading scale is A 90-100%, B 80-89.9%, C 70-79.9%, D 60-69.9% and F 0-59.9%.
Grades are taken as total points from:
Knowledge.... Tests...........100-200 points each….and extra credit (about) 50%.
Assignments.......................10-100 points each……………………… ...(about) 25%
Class Participation/ Lab......10-100 points each…………………… ....(about) 25%
Numerical values are reported in the grade book. Letter grades are based on weighted averages.
All missed work due to absence shall be made up and counted according to the School Attendance Policy.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
1- A three ring binder for chemistry with filler paper (straight edge only).
2- Calculator, and wireless 5x5 Quad ruled note book (lab. /Graph)
3- Bring binder, book, and all class materials everyday to class.
4- Be and stay in your assigned seat when the bell rings.
5- Unacceptable: Profanity, Cheating, and Disrespect.
6- Try hard and use common sense.
7- If at first you don’t succeed.... try trying.
All School Policies per student’s handbook will be followed
Only students who are fully prepared do laboratory work. Safety regulations are rigidly enforced. Excessive or loud talking, disruptive behavior will result in dismissal from the laboratory activity and/or a failing grade. Most work will be done in pairs; however, each student is expected to keep a current record of all data. Absence of a partner is not an acceptable excuse for missing information necessary to submit a lab on time.
Academic Honesty policy: Any incident reported regarding academic dishonesty will be handled via the academic honesty procedures in the Bartram trail H.S. Conduct Code.
I have read and understand the syllabus for Chemistry Honors class. I understand that this syllabus is a required part of my son/daughter's notebook, so I may reference it at any time.
