Week 1 Training
During this week, swimmers and those who are wanting to tryout for swim team will have a 4 day training session before the coaching staff select the team. This will give everyone a chance to get an idea of what swimming is all about. Swimmers must have all their paperwork completed (current physical form (dated after 6/9/2012) and parent permission which are FHSAA approved) before they are allowed into the pool. Please make sure all paperwork must is turned into the Athletic Office (Ms. Cabel) before Aug 9. (*** Notification *** You do not have to have your Parent Permission Form notarized - sorry about the confusion. Coach B)
PAY TO PLAY will be collected after swim team tryouts and the team has been selected.
Week 2 - Tryouts
Practice Time (4:30-6:30 p.m.)
Swimmers will be assessed on their swimming skills, ability to take instruction as well as criticism from the coaching staff. Swimmers are encouraged to bring ample amounts of water during this week. Team will be selected by Wednesday, swim suit orders will occur after swim practice.
Parent Assistance During Swim Meets
Swim Meets are one of the most challenging times for swim teams. Why? Because it takes manpower to run them. What do we need? Timers - we need two timers per lane to start and stop the stopwatches when swimmers are swimming. We need a "Runner" to pick up the timers cards and get them to the computer operator. We need a "Computer Operator" to input the times from the cards so the meet can be scored. We need a starter, someone to fire off the horn to start each race. Bottom line, swim meets cannot run efficiently without assistance from you.
Other Parent Positions
Apparel - We need two parents to help gather information about swim suit sizes, shirt sizes, etc - all the peripheral stuff that goes along with swimming. Plus distribute the goods when they arrive.
Swim Gear - We need two parents to inventory, distribute swim gear, and then collect it when the season is over.
Practice Schedule (beginning Aug 22)
Monday - Wednesday-Friday 5:30 - 7:00 a.m.
Tuesday through Friday from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
All practices are held at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club
Head Coach Mr. Robert Bruns
Coach Bruns has been coaching swimming and diving since 1984. He coached Bartram Swim Team for five years. During that time, the Men's team won Conference Championships three times, were District 4A runner-up two times, and District Champions. Coach Bruns has coach United States Swim Teams, High School, and NCAA swimming and diving. During his 27 years on the pool deck he has coach numerous age group and senior regional qualifiers, state qualifiers, Junior National, and Senior National swimmers. Coach Bruns is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA). Coach Bruns is CPR/First Aid and American Swim Coaches Safety Certified At one time, Coach Bruns was an ASCA Level III swim coach. Coach Bruns was also a competitive swimmer. He was a two time national swimmer in
NAIA and NCAA in the 50 and 100 Freestyle. He was also coached by Olympic Swim Coach Mark Schubert.
Coaching Philosophy:
Swimming is a lifelong sport. Once a swimmer always a swimmer. Through hard work success will follow. Swimmers need to know that the effort you put into workout will show at swim meets. So, if a swimmer puts in a low level of work and energy in their workouts, their times will show. But, if a swimmer puts in a high level of work and energy in their workouts, their times will show it.
Assistant Coach Mrs. Jenna Yow
Coach Yow is on her second year of coach BTHS swimming. But Coach Yow has a strong attachment to BTHS Swimming because she was one of the founding members of the team when it was started in 2001. Coach Yow teaches AP Statistics at BTHS and is working on her Master's in Educational Leadership through FSU. Coach Yow is CPR/First Aid certified
Swim Meet Schedule.
Swim Meet Line-ups
In order to win swim meets, the coaching staff will sometimes place swimmers in events that may not be their "favorite" or "strongest". It needs to be noted that swim meets are stepping stones to Conference, Districts, Regionals, and State. Swim meets give the coaching staff the ability to see where swimmers will help when it comes to the Championship season.
Relay Line-ups
Relays may and sometimes may not be made up of the 4 fastest swimmers on the team. Sometimes, based on the meet line-up, Relay teams will be comprised of various levels of swimmers.
September 15, PVHS vs BTHS @ SJGCC
